Enhanced Organic Compost

We’re using our locally sourced biochar to enhance an organic compost product to amplify the benefits of compost and support soil health and sustainability. This compost is supportive for for home gardeners looking to build plant health and long term soil vitality, as well as for the commercial scale grower looking to build nutrient density and biological activity in their soils.

We’re currently sourcing our Certified Organic compost from Brady Trucking in Shelton, where they have an OMRI (Organic Materials Review Institute) approved aerated static pile system. "Working with community partners we divert over 30,000 tons of food & green waste away from landfills each year and recycle it into finished certified organic compost.”

*“Biochar is a promising additive for enhancing composting efficiency and long-term compost quality,”

According to “Stabilizing organic matter and reducing methane emissions in composting with biochar to strengthen the role of compost in soil health,” from ScienceDirect, the study concludes, "This study demonstrates that incorporating biochar into composting provides dual benefits: it significantly lowers CH4 emissions—by 4.6-fold in treatment “PM+B” and 3.7-fold in treatment “CM+B”—thereby reducing environmental impact, and it promotes the stabilization of organic matter.”

Olympic Soil Solidarity

Olympic Biochar is also collaborating on a compost trial project seeking to re-purpose locally generated organic waste streams and materials, such as seaweed, biochar and shellfish shells, and produce a regionally reliable source of compost and long-term soil resilience and vitality for regional growers.
